Carving lets you take a large walk or list and cut out just the voters inside a geographic area you draw on the map. ## When to carve * You generated a 200-stop walk covering a large area, but want to give one volunteer just the apartment complex on the north end * You want to create a hyper-local election-day route for a specific block * You have an area with high foot traffic you want to prioritize separately ## How to carve from a list 1. Open a saved list (**Dashboard → Lists → \[list name]**) 2. Click **Carve Area** in the list header 3. Draw a polygon on the map around your target area 4. Culper shows how many voters fall inside 5. Name the new list and click **Create List** The carved list can then be used to generate its own walks. ## How to carve from an existing walk Walks can also be carved directly — useful if you've already generated routes and need to sub-divide: 1. Open the walk detail page 2. Click **Split Walk** (for even splits by count or odd/even addresses) — or — Use **Carve Area** to draw a custom boundary ## What happens to the original Carving from a **list** leaves the original list unchanged and creates a new sub-list. Splitting a **walk** replaces the original walk with the sub-walks. The original walk is no longer available as a single unit. If volunteers have already started a walk, splitting or carving it will affect stops they haven't reached yet. Make sure to coordinate with volunteers before splitting an active walk.
